EuroZulu Guided Tours & Safaris Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Thursday 02 October 2014

We had a mixed bag today : two good hyena sightings and a breeding elephant herd but no cats and poor general game !! The first hyena was trotting down the road near Masinda Lodge and the second one was trying to fight off a mass of vultures at the giraffe carcass near marker 17 in the south. The poor hyena was heavily outnumbered and had to dart on and off the carcass quickly to prevent being mobbed by the vultures. The breeding elephant herd was seen between markers 20 and 21 in the south and included new born calves no more than a few days old. Rhinos continue to be elusive although we did spot a black rhino around mid morning. The vultures involved in the feeding frenzy on the giraffe carcass were awesome to see and seemed hell bent on fighting each other to tuck into their breakfast ! General game was poor today but on a positive note we had cool overcast weather and there is now plenty of water in both the Black and White Umfolozi rivers.
