Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Tuesday 09 December 2014

Today was like a football game when all the goals are scored in the first half and none in the second !! During the morning we had a fabulous cheetah sighting and also the spectacle of 4 hyenas fighting with around 40 vultures over a carcass. Both sightings occurred near view point 17 in the south of the Park at the same time. To make it even more spectacular we had two pairs of rhinos on either side of us as the drama unfolded ! Even more special was an early morning treat of a mom and calf black rhino near Nyalazi gate. We have been so lucky to have regular sightings of this special animal in recent weeks. Then, towards 10h00 everything came to a grinding halt and we saw virtually nothing for the rest of the day. How does one explain that ? It was not particularly hot – in fact conditions should have been great for Game viewing – yet the animals vanished into thin air ! There was however one more treat in store for us – a large breeding herd of elephants on the corridor road. They must have been 100 strong and included bulls, cows and new born calves. It was a spectacular way to end our day !!
